Everything You Need to Know About Wheat Straws

Posted by Melanie Green on Nov 12th 2019

Recently, many parts of the world are moving away from single use plastic straws, pushing the restaurant industry to find viable alternatives. Although many options have become available, wheat straws are one of the better options on the market. Wheat is an eco-friendly alternative straw material that combines the benefits of plastic and other environmentally-friendly options. Here is everything that you need to know about wheat straws

Eco-Friendly Benefits of Wheat

Wheat is an eco-friendly alternative straw material for several reasons. Wheat is grown naturally in many parts of the world. It is used in a variety of applications from food to manufacturing practices. Wheat grows relatively straight and very tall, so it is easy to manufacture into straws without a ton of additional energy and materials. Because wheat is plant-based and requires very little processing to make it into straws, it is biodegradable and compostable.

Water-Resistant

Wheat has a fibrous body which is similar to trees or bamboo. Because of this, it is able to hold its shape well when wet. In essence, wheat is water-resistant, which makes it a great choice for making straws. Many people complain that other eco-friendly straws crumble when wet, not lasting the length of the drink. Wheat straws don’t have that problem since they can hold their shape even when they get wet. It makes it a lot easier to finish your drink without worrying about your straw falling apart.

Strong Body

In many cases, especially in bars, smaller straws are used as straws and stirrers. Cocktail straws can be found in many drinks, although few people use them to actually drink from. This is because drinks are meant to be stirred with them to ensure that they stay well mixed while you sip them slowly. Wheat straws have a stronger body than paper straws, making them an effective choice for drink stirrers as well. They work on any size drink too since the taller straws are just as rigid and durable.

Chemical-Free

Wheat straws are produced as a byproduct of wheat harvesting. When the grains are squeezed out of the wheat, all that is left is the stalks, which are processed into straws. Because of this,  the straws are essentially chemical-free. BPA and other known hazardous chemicals are never introduced in the manufacturing process, so they won’t be found in the straws. That means that they cannot leach into your drink as they soak, keeping you safe from many of the known hazardous chemicals in other straw options.
