How To Stay Eco-Friendly In Winter

Posted by Adam Merran on Nov 18th 2013

With the winter weather taking over, it is very easy to let yourself go and waste energy as well as money, especially during the Holidays.

Of course, everybody wants to stay warm and to do so while conserving energy can be somehow challenging and costly. The first thing to do if you want to stay green and save money is to check the thermal insulation at your home. Even tiny cracks can lead to big energy waste so make sure you inspect your place for drafts. Another tip is to cover your AC window unit (both inside and out) if it’s not one that you can remove. It will prevent the cold air to get inside! It is also very tempting to turn up your thermostat in order to be more comfortable but you can be sure you will see the difference in your next power bill! Set your thermostat to 65 degrees and lower it when you are out for a couple of hours. Choose to wear another layer instead and you will be surprised about your savings! Last but not least, setting your ceiling fan at slow speed actually helps heat rooms, even though not a lot of people are aware of it. How come? Because it helps to push down the warm air from the ceilings and make it re-circulate in the room. Think about it!

What else can you do to stay green during the winter holidays?

When it comes to decorations, be careful with your outdoors lights. It is a huge waste of energy and it can also be confusing for nocturnal animals! Make sure you choose a low wattage and if possible, choose motion-sensor lights as they are great to save energy.

When you choose your Christmas tree keep in mind that artificial trees aren’t Eco-friendly for the most part as they are mostly made of non-biodegradable plastic. Real trees are natural and biodegradable and are always a more Eco-friendly option, especially if you can find an organic grower!

If you are having many people over and doing the dishes by the end of the day is not an option (we all know what it is like…) use Eco-friendly disposable tableware. Consider getting Bamboo plates and utensils as it is one of the most Eco-friendly material on earth. Click here if you want to learn more about Why Bamboo Is Great For Disposable Tableware.

The last advice I will give you is to think about recycling and composting everything that can be, it’s an easy step that can definitely make a difference on a daily basis.

Enjoy and stay green!
