As many of you may have heard, the state of California has already banned foam food takeout containers and the law is about to arrive in New York and many other cities.

Not biodegradable or compostable, foam containers can last for thousand years if they break up into small beads after being in the water for a long time and also drain styrene when in contact with heat or grease. Rarely recycled and expensive to clean, foam is simply terrible for the environment and people are starting to realize it and trying to do something about it.

While California is ahead of everyone with a ban that often applies to restaurants and others using disposable cups or containers, more U.S. cities are trying to ban or restrict foam use and it is great news for all of us Eco-friendly advocates!

Let’s take a look at New York City for instance. In the past couple of years, recycling has been a disappointment. Unlike a lot of other places, NYC is not very efficient at recycling, and it’s a shame. Mayor Michael Bloomberg is however willing to make the city go greener by following California’s example and banning all environmentally destructive Styrofoam products.

If foam products are not prohibited yet, they soon will be so if your business is using a lot of them, this is your opportunity to be ahead of the ban and your competitors! If you think that you can’t find economical solutions to replace your foam plates or cups you are definitely wrong. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to be Eco-friendly.
